"Aqua Terrace" is an in-ground sculptural installation designed to engage and educate the public about water absorption, runoff, and flooding within urban areas of Philadelphia. The mosaic-like installation serves as a visual demonstration of water absorption rates of permeable materials, making visible their ecological benefits of filtering pollutants, beautifying the landscape, and providing ample drainage to prevent flooding.
The installation, landscaped directly into the ground, is made up of permeable surface materials such as decorative stone, gravel, crushed brick, color glass, soil and native plants. As rainwater runs through the piece, viewers can contrast the absorption of the porous surface with nearby concrete, asphalt, or cement paving.
WATER TABLE is a site-specific Art Installation that illustrates the benefits of permeable ground surfaces. The piece was designed and created by Philadelphia area artists Nancy Agati (myself) and Rebecca Schultz for the New Jersey Coastal Climate Resilience Art Project.
The WATER TABLE art installation is comprised of natural, permeable materials that have been locally sourced. These materials absorb water more efficiently than the surrounding pavement, which viewers will observe when it rains. The concept is to educate coastal residents about the benefits of permeable surfaces specifically in areas that experience coastal flooding. The image in WATER TABLE is based on a map of Atlantic City, referencing the impacts of sea-level rise on the region.
The WATER TABLE project was funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the New Jersey Coastal Management Program, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, in partnership with the NJ State Council on the Arts and the Atlantic City Arts Foundation.
Working with the Atlantic City Arts Foundation and community volunteers, the artists completed the installation on August 13th, 2021 at the Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City. The installation will be on view at the Absecon Lighthouse, 31 S. Rhode Island Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401, through November 2021.

Undercurrent…Et al. includes large-scale paintings/works on black paper from the Undercurrent and Critical Trends series and recent works Awe or Oblivion 2023.
The primary subject of each piece relates to water and landscape exploring the manner in which humans observe, interact, and/or impact the flow. Each painting in the series consists of overlapping layers of handmade clay and slate pigments interspersed with inked lines, building depth and cyclical motion - revealing variations of reflection, formations of flow, fragments and splintered motion.
While the formal aspect of each series focuses primarily on qualities of movement - land and water, the conceptual investigation attempts to present, and understand the multi-layered, often obscured characteristics of our everyday contemporary lives. As things are revealed, so much more is covered up, layered, and concealed.

Nectar is an exploration of the curvilinear patterns of Paper Wasp nests. The concept is to allow for the patterned layers to determine the overall form and movement of the piece.
The project began with one abandoned nest on three pages, however with donations of wasps nests from as distant as Canada and as close as my Philadelphia neighborhood, it has since grown and expanded to fill 21 pages. The plan is to continue to expand using all collected nests.
Nectar was exhibited in Montreal and Parrsboro, Nova Scotia for the None Such Paper Exhibition 2016. The work was selected for the Creative Paper Construction Award.

~Ripple Effect was a large-scale, circular, carved wooden sculpture designed and constructed for Fluid 2015.
Patterns from the movement of water along Snug Harbor Bay served as surface imagery carved into each segment of the circular form.
Visitors and community members assisted with carving the wooden planks that formed the structure. The process and completed sculpture engaged the community in a creative process and helped connect public viewers to the presence and flow of water at the bay.

The intricately woven patterns from the Emerald Ash Borer larvae are in themselves elegant and remarkable in their design, yet the existence of such markings indicates the inevitable demise of the North American Ash tree.
Crated and Shipped exhibited three wooden crates constructed with the infested Ashwood taken from the Schuylkill Center property. Each crate displayed evidence of the infestation from the Emerald Ash Borer larvae. Most prominent are the swirling patterned, S-shaped, larvae trails along the exterior of the crates that signify the destructive paths of the Emerald Ash Borer larvae. These patterned trails, which indicate the cut-off locations of water and nutrients for the tree’s survival, also appear on the interior of the bark.
Crated and Shipped visually exposed the markings of the Ash borer’s presence, which went undetected in international shipping containers transported to the US, presumably prior to 2001. The Emerald Ash Borer infestation was first detected in Michigan in 2002. The installation included an interactive wooden map made from the dead Ash, identifying the US States affected by the Emerald Ash Borer.

Evident Cycle - a large-scale spiraling, fingerprint form floated on the surface of the Delaware River at the Penn’s Landing boat basin, Philadelphia.
FLOW Exhibition
Philadelphia Sculptor’s
Independence Seaport Museum
Philadelphia, October-December 2019.
Evident Cycle was constructed from cross-cut sections of driftwood collected along the banks of the Delaware River. Each piece was gathered from an area that merged a revitalized natural preserve and public park, with industry, commerce, and transportation. The driftwood sections are of various woods, each from unknown origins with unique textures, patterning, and color. Human interactions along the Delaware River have been constant throughout history. The spiraling fingerprint form referenced the cyclical occurrences of human contact on the shores of the Delaware River.

This series of works on paper began in 2014 during the Tending Space, Art and Meditation Fellowship awarded from the Hemera Foundation. The paintings that make up the series draw from a specific set of design elements, which were repeated, rotated, and layered to form the image.
My approach was an attempt to embrace the Buddhist concept of not knowing or beginner's mind. Therefore, it was not surprising that the imagery shifts and transforms from one painting to the next.
Each composition has become a meditative technique for exploring seemingly boundless visual possibilities.
